FLASH! AHH-AHHH! On this episode of Whatever Happened to Vic Diaz we jump ahead to 1988 and this Eddie Romero-directed action movie (with quite a bit of broad comedy) starring Flash Gordon himself, Sam J. Jones. It also features some absolutely horrible audio, some unique computer hacking, and lots and lots of explosions. Also, Vic Diaz shows up! Check it out.

On this episode of Cinema Smorgasbord presents Cinema Fantastica we travel back to the 1977 Sitges Film Festival and two extreme, and extremely memorable, horror films that played to a jury that included Dario Argento! First up is the grimy Wes Craven family-takes-on-irradiated-cannibals film THE HILLS HAVE EYES, before we pivot to the surreal Satan-loving Nunsploitation masterpiece ALUCARDA. On this episode of Cinema Smorgasbord we return to WE DO OUR OWN STUNTS: THE WORK OF JACKIE CHAN, and this time we’re looking at a true oddity. Based on a legendary erotic novel from the early 1600s, this film features no martial arts, but still includes plenty of action. It’s THE GOLDEN LOTUS, a Shaw Brothers production featuring lots of (uncomfortable) sex, murder, intrigue and a very young Jackie Chan in his kinda sorta first role.

It’s the long awaited return of the world’s only Eric Roberts-related podcast, only this time things are a little different. In that we’ve slapped REDUX at the end of the title and it’s no longer bi-weekly. This time we’re joined by Justin Harlan from the Grindhouse Messiah podcast and The Farsighted Blog. Check him out on Twitter @thepaintedman.

The great character actor Dick Miller passed away on January 30th, 2019 at the age of 90, leaving a legacy of more than 180 films. On You Don’t Know Dick, we’re going to – with the help of friends and special guests – look at the film and television work of this tremendous performer, and try to get to the bottom of what made him such a special presence in so many films.

On our first episode, we’re looking at the Roger Corman (sorta) directed gothic horror THE TERROR from 1963, starring Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, Sandra Knight and Dick Miller.

The film is available in various public domain versions, but the best available to watch for free is this version from The Film Detective:

On our next episode we’ll be looking at one of Miller’s most famous roles in 1959’s A BUCKET OF BLOOD. Watch that here:

There are dozens of genre film festivals around the world, and we either can’t afford – or don’t have the time – to go to any of them. We’re guessing a lot of you are in the same boat. On Cinema Smorgasbord presents Cinema Fantastica we pick one of those festivals, a year in which it ran, and choose two films that played at that festival to BATTLE against each other.

On the premiere episode we go back to the very first edition of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival to look at two feature length anime favorites. First Doug puts forward the astrological post-apocalyptic madness of 1986’s FIST OF THE NORTH STAR, and then Liam serves up the ultra-violent, ultra-sexy, ultra-misogynistic WICKED CITY from 1987!
