Ken Russell tackles the life of “the great lover” Rudolph Valentino in 1977’s VALENTINO, an occasionally inspired bio-pic that fixates (and speculates) on the silent film star’s much-debated sexuality. On the latest episode of PRAISING KANE we’re looking at the film, its stars, and whether or not it’s Ken Russell-y enough to deserve rediscovery. Of course we also look at the performance of the great Carol Kane as Valentino’s first wife (and Fatty Arbuckle beau) Jean Acker. CHECK IT OUT.

As mentioned on the episode, here’s the 2021 Big Slick Virtually Talented Show

Nothing in your education or experience could prepare you for Alejandro Jodorowsky’s THE HOLY MOUNTAIN and on this episode of JodoWOWsky we’re going long on one of the strangest, most unique, most transformative films ever made. We start by discussing Jodorowsky’s career post-El Topo and the preparation for – and influences on – THE HOLY MOUNTAIN, before we dive into the film proper, discussing our thoughts, interpretations and feelings about each section. We finish with the film’s post-production and wide ranging influences: from Kanye West, to Beyonce, to MGMT and beyond!

Your hosts are Cinema Smorgasbord regulars Doug Tilley (@Doug_Tilley) and Liam O’Donnell (@LiamRulz), but they are joined on this adventure by the always wonderful and incisive Julia Marchese!

Julia is a filmmaker, actor, writer, film programmer and podcaster. Julia’s first film was Out of Print, a documentary about the importance of revival cinema and 35mm to culture. The film has played all over the world in film archives, art house cinemas and universities. The 35mm print of the film is now housed at The Academy Film Archives. Her next project is a short film adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “I Know What You Need”. She is the co-host of Horror Movie Survival Guide, a weekly podcast that takes a deep dive into a different horror film each week, focusing on how to become the final girl. Beware! They are still at large! On this episode of WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VIC DIAZ it’s 1974’s SAVAGE SISTERS, a wonderfully cartoonish (sorta) women-in-prison film full of outrageous humor, double crossing and – of course Vic Diaz as ONE EYE. Gloria Hendry, Cheri Caffaro and Rosanna Ortiz play the titular characters, with Sid Haig, Eddie Garcia and John Ashley (who also produced) as their often ridiculous foils. What did we think? Listen and find out!

Our look at the filmography of the great John Singleton continues with two of his mid-period films, starting with the often-brutal historical drama ROSEWOOD from 1997, followed by the coming-of-age comedy-drama BABY BOY from 2001. Also, we had already recorded this and Liam deleted it. HEAR THE WEARINESS IN OUR VOICES. Enjoy!

Our chronological exploration of the films of Carol Kane continues on PRAISING KANE! On this episode we’re looking at Mike Nichols’ controversial comedy-drama CARNAL KNOWLEDGE starring Jack Nicholson, Art Garfunkle, Candice Bergen, and Ann-Margret (and also, briefly, Carol Kane). The sexual politics of the early 70s is laid bare, but is it revealing? Or simply misogynistic? Let’s talk about it!

On this episode of Cinema Smorgasbord we return to WE DO OUR OWN STUNTS: THE WORK OF JACKIE CHAN, and this time we’re looking at a true oddity. Based on a legendary erotic novel from the early 1600s, this film features no martial arts, but still includes plenty of action. It’s THE GOLDEN LOTUS, a Shaw Brothers production featuring lots of (uncomfortable) sex, murder, intrigue and a very young Jackie Chan in his kinda sorta first role.
